Beyond the vibrant city centre of Liverpool the Mersey Estuary has over 57 kilometres of stunning beaches and coastline. The region also boasts a rich variety of inland habitats ranging from fields and hedgerows to woodland, heath and moorland.
The Liverpool City Region supports a remarkable variety of birds, animals and plants with many important species being regularly recorded throughout a wealth of designated Sites of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI).
The Liverpool City Region is one of the few places in the
UK where you can be guaranteed a sight of the endangered native red squirrel and there are many other places in the region where work is being undertaken to protect our plant and animal species. Here you can also find Britain's largest herd of African elephants at Knowsley Safari Park and Europe's only National Wildflower Centre.
