International Slavery Museum

This unique and thought-provoking museum explores the history of the slave trade and Liverpool’s involvement, while addressing issues such as freedom, identity, human rights, racial discrimination and cultural change. Replacing the Transatlantic Slavery Gallery, this is only the first phase of the museum’s development and it is split into three main areas; ‘Life in West Africa’, ‘Enslavement and the Middle Passage’ and ‘Legacy’. Features of the museum include a walk-in audio-visual display, using film to re-create the appalling conditions on slave ships in the Middle Passage, a black achievers wall and a ‘music desk’ allowing visitors to listen to tracks from a variety of different musical genres. This is the only museum of its kind in the UK and will take you on a journey that will give you greater awareness and understanding of both historical and contemporary slavery.

Road Directions

The Maritime Museum is located at the Albert Dock on Liverpool's famous waterfront, adjacent to the Pier Head. Please note that the riverside walkway between Pier Head and the Albert Dock will be closed until early 2009 while construction takes place in the area. Major roadworks are currently taking place in the Albert Dock area which may affect Strand Street and other routes to the museum. Visitors are advised to use the Dock Road route until the riverside walkway is open again. By Rail: Located in the Albert Dock complex, the nearest train station is at James Street.
